About Angola

ANGOLA IN AFRICA AND THE WORLD

Angola is located on the Atlantic Coast South West Africa between Namibia and the Congo. It also borders the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia to the east. The country is divided into an arid coastal strip stretching from Namibia to Luanda, a moist interior plateau, a dry savannah in the south and southeast inland, and tropical forest in the north and in Cabinda.

The Zambezi River and several tributaries of the Congo River have their sources in Angola. The coastal strip is tempered by the cold Benguela current, which results in a climate similar to coastal Peru or Baja California. There is a short rainy season, which runs from February to April. Summers are hot and dry, winters are mild. The interior highlands have a mild climate with a season from November to April rains, followed by a dry season, colder, from May to October. The altitude ranges, generally from 1 000 to 2 000 meters. The northern regions and Cabinda have rain throughout most of the year.

Angola was a former colony of Portugal, with the onset of colonization in the fifteenth century and remained a Portuguese colony until independence in 1975. The first European to reach Angola was the Portuguese explorer Diogo Cão.  Its capital and largest city is Luanda. In the 1950s began to articulate the resistance against colonial domination, driven by decolonization that had begun in Africa, after the end of World War II, in 1945. This resistance, aimed at the transformation of the colony of Angola in country independent, culminated in 1961 in an armed struggle against Portugal had three main protagonists: the Angola People’s Liberation Movement (MPLA), the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA) and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA).

On November 11, 1975 was proclaimed the independence of Portugal, the MPLA in Luanda, and the FNLA and UNITA together in Huambo. After independence and following an electoral process, began a civil war that came to end only in 2002 with the death of the historical leader of UNITA, Jonas Savimbi.

Portuguese is the official language of Angola. Among the African languages spoken in the country, some have the status of national languages. These as well as other African languages are spoken by the respective ethnic groups and dialects have corresponding ethnic subgroups.

The political regime in Angola is the presidential system, in which the President is also head of the government, which still has legislative powers. The government’s executive branch consists of the president (currently José Eduardo dos Santos), the Vice-President (Manuel Domingos Vicente, fruit of the new Constitution) and the Council of Ministers. Angola has its administrative division composed of 18 provinces and the administrative division of the smaller territory is the neighborhood in the city, while in rural areas is the village.

Angola is rich in minerals, especially diamonds, oil and iron ore; also has copper deposits, manganese, phosphates, salt, mica, lead, tin, gold, silver and platinum.

Important oil fields were discovered in 1966 off the coast of Cabinda, and later off the coast to Luanda, Angola becoming one of the major oil producing countries, with economic development made possible and dominated by this activity.
